The best thing to do would be to get a dog from a reputable breeder and also go to obedience school with your pup. I do think a lot depends on the breeding, socializing, training and personalities of each dog though. They both seem equals when it comes to alerting us of noises outside and recognizing those they know with wiggles and slobbers and those they don't know with hair raised and foam at the mouth.Ĭan't comment from first hand experience on the female/female aggression, but I have heard that 2 females are more likely to disagree and more likely to hold a grudge. My male thinks nothing of stepping on anyone's body parts. My male learned everything at a snails pace - but once he learned something he obeys better than my female (he's also more treat motivated, so that may figure in to that)īoth of mine love kids (neighbors and relatives as we don't have any of our own), but my female is gentler. My female learned everything very quickly - but she is stubborn and chooses when to listen now (selective hearing) She does obey when it really counts. I can only respond based on experiences with my two, others opinions might be different. Thank you so much for helping us decide on our future pup I'm looking forward to be able to post puppy pics! Again, which do you agree with?ģ) Is one or the other a better watchdog or guarddog?Ĥ) True or fale - Males guard the house while females guard the family?ĥ) Our next door neighbor has 2 female Boxers (3 and 5 y/o) - I've heard females tend to be agressive toward each other - Will that most likely be the case even if we bring home a young puppy (female) and will they become agressive once our puppy grows up? Which is it?Ģ) As far as kids - Some places say the male is more tolerant of kids so is the better choice, while other places say the female has more maternal instincts so she will be the better choice for kids. After having German Shepherds who were easy to train and super obedient, reading how stubborn and disobedient Boxers can get is a bit discouraging, LOLġ) Some forums/articles say that the male boxers are more laid back, less stubborn and therfor easier to train and are more obedient? Other places said that the females are more outgoing, eager to learn and easy to train. What I want is a dog that will be a good watchdog (alert of strangers, but not too agressive), good with kids (ours' and others' kids) BUT - I also want a dog that is easy to train and is obedient. To be honest, the information I find it pretty conflicting, so I figured what a better place to ask than a forum full of Boxer owners? I have been reading about Boxers for weeks now, countless hours, among others also trying to decide if a male or female would be best choice for us. Now, I've always had German Shepherds in the past (LOVE them) but we don't think a GSD will fit into our live at the moment (neighborhood setting and such) so from the research I've done it seems like a Boxer will be a good fit I want to do the responsible thing and ask all questions BEFORE getting the puppy, to make sure we are prepared We are a family of 5 looking into to getting a boxer puppy in the near future.
